Sean Kelly was born in Kilcummin on 26th of April 1952 into a family deeply involved in the G.A.A. Four of his uncles, the best known of which was sean who won an all Ireland with Kerry in 1953, had distinguished playing careers. The tradition has passed down to the present generation as sean's five brothers have been equaly active, not only as players but in team management.

After attending his local primary school he progressed through Tralee C.B.S and St. Brendan's Killarney to St. Patricks college of education where he qualified as a natioal school teacher. He then enrolled in U.C.D where he received a B.A and H. Dip. in education.

While resident in Dublin he taught in Cromcastle Green B.N.S in Kilmore in 1971-75 and introduced Gealic games to the school and established a link between yhe school and parnells. Upon returning to Kerry to teach in St. Brendan's Killarney, he coached the school to many successes the highlight of which was th Hogan Cup victory in 1992.

On the playing field he won a Kerry Junior Football Championship with Kilcummin in 1973 and two County leagues in 1973 and 1985. He won county intermediate hurling titles in 1983 and 1998 with St. Patricks, a club he helped found. While in Dublin he won a Duke Cup in U.C.D. and played with Parnells. An illustrious administrative career began in 1975.
