Joseph White was born in Castlecove in 1931. Joined the Air Corpse in Dublin where he began cycling and won a host of All ireland track and field and road championships. Also raced in the Ras Tailteann and won a stage before serious injury in the Ras ended his career. But it was in 1954 when he was defending his 100 mile road racing championship of Ireland in Klldare that he road into world history. He became the first man ever to break four hours for a 100 mile cycle. I have spent a fascinating evening with him as Joseph passed through Killarney on his way to Castlecove and recorded for Terrace Talk his forgotten career.
