Dublin born John Giles was discovered by scouting legend Billy Behan while playing for local club Stella Maris. The promising youngster signed professional terms with Manchester United in 1956 and made his first-team debut at home to Tottenham three years later. Giles quickly established himself as a regular in the United first team, playing alongside players such as Bobby Charlton and Denis Law. After winning an FA Cup winners medal with Manchester United in 1963, he moved on to Leeds United for £33,000 where he would spend the majority of his playing career.

At Elland Road, John Giles went on to win two league titles, two European Fairs Cups, one FA Cup and one Second Division title under the guidance of legendary manager Don Revie. Giles finally left Leeds at the end of the 1975–76 season to become player-manager at West Bromwich Albion where he would lead the Second Division side to promotion in his first season at the club. After making his debut for the Republic of Ireland in 1959 against Sweden at Dalymount Park, he collected a total of 59 caps in an international career spanning 20 years. John Giles also managed the Irish team before he eventually quit management to concentrate on his work as a media pundit on RTE.
